My interview with lewi Hornby about the split of D.Y.C.E
How did the band meet and decide to form D.Y.C.EWe all knew each other from college and were friends there. We decided to form a band seen as we were all studying music, but didn’t have a bassist. Then luckily we found Jay on ‘Join my band.com.’ he came down for a jam and we all hit it off.
How long did it take for the band to get going? Not long at all, we all hit it off instantly and it didn’t take long for us to learn aload of tunes to play. Milky (drummer) knew people who could get us gigs in local places like ‘Zanzi bar’ and ‘Barfly’ so we started gigging quite quickly.
What was it like at first? The band was great we got on so well, we all had pretty cool ideas and it was good having Jay there, he was full of new ideas. he was like a breath of fresh air.
Was there any tension in the bend before the split? Not at first we all got along great, we weren’t just a band, we were friends. We’d always hang out. Mainly me, Jay (bassist), Coke (rhythm guitarist) and Stocker (Singer).
Did the band spent too much time together?Yeah, a lot. We gigged at least twice a week and had practices at ‘fallen industries’ on Saturdays and Sundays. We’d usually meet up in between them too, just to hang out. But after a while the band kinda split into two groups.
When did you first notice the band wasn’t getting along so well?At our first recording session there was a lot of arguing about what songs we were going to record. But it was resolved eventually even though some people in the band were not happy with the end choices. Mainly Coke, because he wanted to do his own songs rather than the ones the band could play best. His ego was a bit hurt.
Were you able to overcome this or did this cause further problems?Erm, it didn’t cause problems but you could tell he wasn’t happy about the song choices so it was a bit tense between us all. We didn’t have a practice for a week because Coke and Milky said they were too busy...which they weren’t they were just pissed off still. So when we did get practicing and gigging again it was kinda like them against us and we argued alot.
What did you argue about?Just stupid things like where we were next gigging, what song we would play and in what order, it was silly really. One of our friends said
‘we were all just like a married couple!’
When and why did Chris leave? Chirs left a few weeks after the recording, he just couldn’t be bothered with all the tention and arguing between everyone. He was too laid back for all that.
What was the bands reaction to him leaving?Music wise it wasn’t such a big deal because we already had three guitarists so he wasn’t really that needed anyway, but on a personal level me and jay took it quite bad, we’d known Chris since primary school and it put a downer on the whole band and made us realise we were kinda breaking apart.
Once chris left did things get better or worse in the band?Worse, definitely worse. We’d argue more about even smaller things. But we could cope with that it just became like normal. We didn’t like each other but we liked what we did.

What happened at your last gig and where was it?Our last gig was at Talulas in New Brighton. It started off really well we all got drunk and played really well. Until Milky started arguing with one of the other bands, just a clash of music taste really. The whole band stepped up to defend him. Nothing came of it though, we just left and to be honest I’d forgotten all about it. Until we started getting comments on our Youtube account saying how rubbish we were. The comments were from the band at the gig. We obviously defended our self and it got a bit out of hand.
How did it get out of hand?Threats got made on our side because we knew we were gigging with them again soon. So we thought it would be funny to shit them up. We weren’t really gonna do anything. Because of the threats some manager got involved and said if we didn’t stop it we wouldn’t be able to gig anywhere on the Wirral or Liverpool again. This just annoyed us even more so we just kicked off again. In the end Coke and Milky decided to leave a comment on the Youtube saying they were sorry and it was the rest of the band not them. This wasn’t the case at all.
How did the rest of the band react to this?We went mad obviously, not for the fact it was some manger and we thought we were in trouble. Just because they played as must of a part in all this as we did but they were trying to blame it on us. The band met up at practise and some harsh words were said on all parts. Me, jay and stocker walked out, we just couldn’t be arsed with them anymore.
How do they take you walking out, leaving just two of them?I don’t think they were too bothered to be honest. They became so rap up with themselves that i think they thought the were better than us anyway. Which they weren’t, me and jay had the most input in making the songs, they just played what we told them to. I think that’s why we argued to so much, not because we took over or anything, but because we had more ideas them then and our ideas were better this annoyed them. Infact you could say they were jealous.
When did the band next speak? We didn’t speak for weeks, we all knew it was over but no one had said it officially. Until about three weeks later when me, Jay and stocker were hanging out, we got a call of Coke basically telling us that the band was over because of the Threats on the Youtube account. But we all knew it wasn’t because of that, he just didn’t have the bottle to tell us the real reason.
What do you thing was the real reason for the split?Too many big egos in one band doesn’t really go well. They were too interested in feeding their egos and looking good that they’d forgotten it was about the music, not who gets the most attention.
